Is it right to start a business?

Fish farm: A purposeful start for fun, food, or commercial purposes. It is important for one to weigh the reasons for starting a farm and prove that it is the right activity for one.

This stage is key to understanding start-up and ongoing costs and markets. In short, a farmer needs tanks and pumps, fish food, storage space, refrigerators, aerators, water quality testing tools and fry. These costs are added to the land on which the pond was built, to the pond excavated, and to the permit. Fish farming, like most farming operations, requires hard work and exists in the supply and demand markets.

Farming system

There are two kinds of farming — conventional and unconventional. Commercial fish farming is unconventional farming in ponds, cages, water tanks (plastic and concrete), dam lines ponds, fish and vegetable symbiosis and recycling aquaculture systems. Each system is determined by a number of factors, including the size of its interest.

Once you decide on the system, you need to determine the fish you want to raise based on the market. In fish fillets, for example, the percentage of tilapia is 30%. However, there are some types of fish that are more productive.

Catfish and tilapia are the most accepted fish on the market. They are adapted to fresh water and have a wonderful taste. The NATIONAL Fisheries Institute has also domesticated the Babushka (Keysinya), which can grow up to 5 kg, making it a candidate for commercial production.

Machine for Making Fish Feed

Floating fish feed machine is the best choice for homemade fish feed and fish farms. With a floating fish feed extruder, you can use cheap local raw materials to produce high-quality feed and reduce feed costs.

Seed quality

The seed or fry determines the quality of the fish you are going to harvest. Research stations should ensure the production of uniform size, no deformation, can swim normally, the same quality fish fry.

Commercial fish farmers are advised to choose fish of the same sex. Males are preferred because they grow 30 percent faster than females. It is important to note that females lose both growth time and weight when they lay eggs. Good seeds are obtained from accredited sources.

To make sure you’re getting the right amount of fish, you’ll need a numerical scale and a bucket to fill with water. Then, you put the fish in the bucket and record the weight. You divide by the number of fish to determine the weight of the fish. This is also helpful in determining the feed ratio.

Determine the number of fish per unit. For tilapia, it is recommended to put 3 fish per square meter in the pond. In the cage, 78 fish per cubic meter is the ideal number. If properly stocked, if grown in a pond, the fish should mature between seven and nine months and weigh between 300 and 500 grams, or between 450 and 500 grams if grown in a cage.

The quality of the water

Fish grow in water, so the quality of water is very important. Fish water has to be of a certain quality, and if it isn’t, your fish may end up growing poorly, feeding poorly, or dying, or even dying. So, you need to determine the quality of the water.

This is done with specialized equipment, such as a water meter, which measures oxygen, ammonia, temperature, electrical conductivity and acidity.

Feeds

Fish food is divided into two main types, natural feed and artificial feed. Artificial feed, which must be managed by a fish farm, can be complete feed and supplementary feed.

Supplementary feed is used when people are involved in fertilizing, while complete feed is good feed to help fish grow. The complete feed is made from carefully selected ingredients to provide the fish with all its nutritional requirements (vitamins, minerals, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates). They are made in a form that is easy for fish to ingest and digest.

Complete feed refers to how many kilograms of feed the farmer must feed the fish during production. Fish feed is mainly pellets, which are supposed to float, but there is a lack of equipment in Uganda to make this feed. That is why farmers go overseas to markets such as Brazil, Vietnam and China.

The market information

Fish go bad about 18 hours after being out of water. While appreciation is important to extend the life of fresh fish by up to 24 months, it is an expensive investment. He said small-scale fish farmers need to sell fresh fish because tighter trade and travel restrictions, particularly in the case of the Covid-19 outbreak, have made importing and exporting fresh fish more complex and expensive.

Rising freight costs, coupled with increased transport times, mean less profit for fish farmers.

Feeding

Weigh the feed bags when they arrive. Store the feed bag in a dry place off the ground. In the morning, according to your feeding schedule, choose the appropriate size, weigh the feed.

Put each bucket with each pond — call it fish; Always start at the same point and then fill the pond to see if the fish are ok. For catfish, start feeding immediately; Four times a day. For tilapia, wait until 9 a.m. and feed three times a day.
